چکیده

The SRL (speciate re-entrant logic) of King 1989] is a sound, complete and decidable logic designed speciically to support formalisms for the HPSG (head-driven phrase structure grammar) of Pollard and Sag 1994]. The SRL notion of modellability in a signature is particularly important for HPSG, and the present paper modiies an elegant method due to Blackburn and Spaan 1993] in order to prove that modellability in each computable signature is 0 1 , modellability in some nite signature is 0 1-hard (hence not decidable), and modellability in some nite signature is decidable. Since each nite signature is a computable signature, we conclude that 0 1-completeness is the least upper bound on the complexity of modellability both in nite signatures and in computable signatures, though not a lower bound in either.

Finite-State Phonology In HPSG

Attention on constraint-based grammar formalisms such as Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) has focussed on syntax and semantics to the exclusion of phonology. This paper investigates the incorporation of a non-procedural theory of phonology into HPSG, based on the ‘one-level’ model of Bird & Ellison (1992). The standard rule-representation distinction is replaced by the description-ob...

On the Complexity of RSRL

In this paper we present a computability and a complexity result on Relational Speciate Reentrant Logic (RSRL). RSRL is a description logic designed to formalise the linguistic framework and theory Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar. We show here that given an RSRL-formula and a finite RSRL-interpretation it is in general not decidable if the formula is true in the given interpretation by red...

A Constraint-based Grammar of Case : To Correctly Predict Case Phrases Occurring without Their Head Verb

The current paper argues that the phenomenon in Japanese that case phrases occur without their head verb before the finite complementizer would falsify the HPSG valence/content analysis, for example, in Sag 1997, Pollard and Sag 1994, if no phantom relation corresponding to a verb is used in the syntax or semantics. The HPSG valence/content analysis is that the content of a case phrase structur...

Morph Moulder: Teaching Software for HPSG and Description Logics

The graphical software Morph Moulder (MoMo) presented here was originally created for teaching the logical foundations of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) in an e-Learning environment. It has then been extended to a treatment of description logics (DL), which are at present the standard formalism for building ontologies. With MoMo, students can construct interpretations of sets of fo...

Deterministic Consistency Checking of LP Constraints

We provide a constraint based computational model of linear precedence as employed in the HPSG grammar formalism. An extended feature logic which adds a wide range of constraints involving precedence is described. A sound, complete and terminating deterministic constraint solving procedure is given. Deterministic computational model is achieved by weakening the logic such that it is sufficient ...
